What is Piranesi? Named after Giovanni Battista Piranesi, the foremost 18th century architectural draftsman, Piranesi provides the capabilities of a traditional rendering program, plus the direct control, interactivity, and representational freedom of a paint program.

Why is Piranesi special? For decades, the computer graphics industry has focused on the pursuit of realism. The goal has been to create views that are indistinguishable from photographs. Piranesi changes that, applying computer graphics to produce a more expressive form of artistic rendering. With Piranesi you can paint quickly, honouring the geometric boundaries of your model without the time-consuming process of constructing elaborate stencils or masks. Textures can be painted onto surfaces in correct perspective for the view. The three-dimensional nature of Piranesi is most clearly demonstrated by the way that it pastes in elements of entourage, such as trees or figures, (known as 'cutouts'). When a cutout is placed in the scene its size is modified according to its distance from the eyepoint. If the cut-out is partly obscured by other elements in the scene, the hidden parts are suppressed correctly.

Step 2: Paint in perspective Piranesi responds to depth and material information stored in each pixel, enabling you to work quickly and accurately as you "paint in space". You can use colours and tints, apply photographic or hand drawn textures, and add backgrounds and supporting detail. Feedback is instantaneous, allowing you to test options and steadily refine your image.

Step 3: Express your ideas The real fun starts as you begin to use Piranesi's intelligent painting tools in an expressive way, adding emphasis to your real areas of interest and relaxing focus in others. Develop your image as a soft watercolour or a clearly delineated etching. Each effect you invent can be stored as a style to be applied consistently to future images.
